Umaratu Foundation has partnered with a number of young Indonesian designers to present the Summer Collection 2025, a fashion line that combines the richness of Sumba ikat weaving with touches of contemporary design. This initiative aims to bring the work of local weavers to a wider market and introduce the beauty of cultural heritage in a modern and functional form.
As part of the creative process, the designers made direct visits to weaving villages in Sumba to learn about natural dyeing techniques, understand the philosophical meanings behind each motif, and engage in dialogue with the local community. The result is a series of designs that are not only fashionable but also rich in storytelling and cultural depth.
The collection features lightweight garments, outerwear, and accessories made from natural materials such as organic cotton and linen. The colors are derived from Sumba’s traditional natural dyes, including indigo, noni root, and tree bark. Each piece will include a story label with information about the motif, the origin of the textile, and its symbolic meaning.
This collaboration is also part of an empowerment program, where weavers receive additional training in production quality, packaging, and an introduction to the needs of the modern fashion market. The approach aims to position artisans not only as producers but also as key players in the creative value chain.
The Summer 2025 Collection will officially launch in June 2025 through the Umaratu Etalase platform. The launch will include an open virtual session that highlights the stories behind the creation of the collection and its impact on the weaving communities.
Through this collaboration, Umaratu hopes to bridge tradition and innovation while strengthening the position of Sumba ikat as an essential part of Indonesia’s inclusive and sustainable creative industry.
